Sterkfontein Dam Irrigation Trenching Project

Project Overview

HRM Projects recently completed a precision trenching and pipe installation project near Sterkfontein Dam to support large-scale irrigation infrastructure for local agricultural operations.

The scope involved trenching to a depth of 800 mm and a width of 320 mm, designed specifically to accommodate 300 mm high-capacity water pipes feeding multiple irrigation pivot towers (spilpunte).

Project Objectives

To create an efficient and durable underground water distribution system capable of supplying consistent water flow from the main source to multiple centre-pivot irrigation points, ensuring optimal field coverage and water management.

Scope of Work

Trenching & Excavation:
Precision trenching at 800 mm depth × 320 mm width using HRM’s specialized trenching machinery to ensure clean, consistent channels with minimal ground disturbance.
Pipe Installation:
Placement of 300 mm PVC water pipes with reinforced joins, securely laid and aligned to flow from the primary water source to irrigation points.
Backfilling & Compaction:
Backfilling with stabilized material to protect the pipes and prevent soil collapse, ensuring long-term durability.
Site Restoration:
Ground leveling and compaction to restore terrain integrity and minimize erosion risk.
How the Irrigation System Works

Water Source:
The system draws from a borehole, dam, or reservoir as its main supply point.
Pipes & Trenches:
Underground pipes distribute water from the source to the central base of each irrigation tower (spilpunt).
Pivot System:
The spilpunt rotates slowly in a circular motion, spraying water evenly across the field.
Automated systems use motors, timers, or GPS guidance.
Manual systems can be repositioned by tractor.
Coverage Efficiency:
The result is a circular irrigation pattern, ensuring even water distribution — the same pattern visible in satellite images as green circular fields.
